Triumph Baptist Church

Philadelphia, PA, 2003

AOJ prepared the preliminary design and design development for this new 2000 seat church, and for the renovation of the attached school for spg3 Architects. In this case SPG3 was hired by the contractor, not the church, as part of the design-build team, and thus did not have control over many of aspects of the final product. The interior sanctuary space, with its sweeping roof and modern stained glass windows, is still a very inspiring space.

Parish House Addition and Renovation

St. Paul’s Church, Centreville, MD

This project required great sensitivity to both the 1834 sanctuary and the English Arts & Crafts style 1904 parish house. The parish hall on the second floor was doubled in size without disturbing the decorative open roof framing in the original half of the parish hall, and complementing it with exposed modern wood heavy timber truss-work. AOJ was project architect for Torchio Architects of Centreville.

Cathedral of St. John the Baptist

Charleston, SC

This restoration and renovation project renewed the interior of the sanctuary by introducing modern mechanical systems, breaking through the east wall to move the altar further back, creating more space in the chancel for liturgical functions, and renewing all finishes. AOJ was project designer for Arthur Cotton Moore/Associates on this project and did much of the design and all the construction drawings.

The existing church building was expanded, taking sanctuary seating from approximately 120 to 220, doubling Sunday School space, and providing space in the basement and a first floor multi-purpose room for the youth group. The existing building of 5,600 square feet was increased on the first floor by 3,800 square feet, and an additional 3,000 square was provided in the daylight basement.

AOJA built on previous remodeling work designed by AOJA including remodeling of the fellowship area, the Fireside room (a meeting and prayer room), and the office/conference room. Custom designed trim profiles were carried through the new addition, and a handsome wood connecting stair enhances the southwest corner of the building. The large windows surrounding the stair provide a beacon of light at night.
